Referee Certification Required

AYSO has announced important steps to ensure that every AYSO child has the best possible soccer learning experience. Referees in every AYSO Region are required to have AYSO’s Referee Training, AYSO Safe Haven® and CDC Concussion certification when they take the field. The policy was approved and adopted by the National Board of Directors at their July 2009 meeting and is supported by the National Referee Advisory Commission.

Instructor Led Referee Training is held before the start of the Fall and Spring Seasons in multiple locations in Area C (Southeast Michigan).

There is an Online Regional Referee Training course that is available at www.aysou.org. This course also requires an in-person Companion Course module for certification.

Registering for a Training Course

It is important that you register for your chosen course in advance. To find available classes and register online:

1. Click on the AYSOU button on the home page of this website, or go to http://www.aysou.org.
2. Log in using your AYSO username and password.
3. Click on "Live Courses"
4. On the left side of the screen, click on "Show All"
5. On the right side, the available courses will then be shown by date and you can scroll down to find the course that you want.
6. Click on "Sessions" to see all the available sessions (classes) for that course.
7. When you find the session that you want, click on "Register". If you want to change your session, go to the session for which you are registered, click on it, and click "Unregister". You can then select another session.

AYSO Referee Levels

U-8 Official: Trained in the fundamental skills needed to officiate short-sided games for players under 8 years of age.
Requirements: Complete the 8U Official Course and pass the 8U Official Exam. (minimum age 10)

Assistant Referee: Trained in basic skills needed to be an AYSO Assistant Referee.
Requirements: Complete the Assistant Referee Course and pass the Assistant Referee Exam. (minimum age 12)

Regional Referee: Trained in the basic skills needed to referee AYSO matches under AYSO (FIFA) Laws and AYSO National Rules and Regulations
Requirements: Complete the Basic Referee Course and pass the Regional Referee Exam. (minimum age 12)

Intermediate Referee: Trained in the skills needed beyond the basic level to referee soccer matches that are more physically demanding and challenging under the AYSO (FIFA) Laws and AYSO National Rules and Regulations.
Requirements: Complete 25 games as referee with at least five in 12U games, complete the Intermediate Referee Course, pass the Intermediate Referee Exam and be (observed) mentored in a 12U game. (minimum age 14)

Advanced Referee: Trained in the advanced skills needed to referee most upper-level AYSO soccer matches under the AYSO (FIFA) Laws and AYSO National Rules and Regulations.
Requirements: Complete 50 games as referee with at least 10 in 14U and five as an assistant referee (in 14U), complete the Advanced Referee Course, pass the Advanced Referee Exam, pass one assessment as referee and one as assistant referee in a 14U match, pass the AYSO Physical Fitness Test. (minimum age 16)

National Referee: Trained in the professional aspects of refereeing needed to referee more challenging upper-level matches under the AYSO (FIFA) Laws and AYSO National Rules & Regulations.
Requirements: Complete 100 games as referee with at least 30 in 16U/19U games and 25 as Assistant Referee with at least 10 in 19U, complete the National Referee Course, pass the National Referee Exam, pass two assessments as referee in 16U or 16U matches and one as assistant referee in a 19U match, complete the AYSO Physical Fitness Test. (minimum age 18)
